The new constitution of January 1st, 1993 marked the beginning of Slovakia as an independent republic. In spite of an unfavourable development regarding the European integration in the past, the situation has changed after the last elections. Political and economical reforms and transformation of economics have led to liberalisation of the market and gradual privatisation is the background for future development in line with modern progressive European countries.

The rules for pricing and reimbursement not allowing exceptional support for selected manufacturers, the Slovak pharmaceutical market still gives a fair chance to any company. The level of provided health services is rather high in spite of indebtedness of health insurance companies inherited from the past.

A further positive aspect is the relatively short approval time for new products. The Slovakian regulatory system has been harmonised with the European model. Products with an EU approval go through an abridged procedure.
